WALT 1610 is a student-run radio station at Davidson College, broadcast from Davidson, North Carolina. The station serves as a platform for creative self-expression, music appreciation, and community engagement. Student volunteers broadcast a wide range of music and programming 24 hours a day. The station uses a high quality digital radio web stream that can reach a global audience of up to 10,000 listeners.
Founded in 1986, WALT began as a carrier current station for students in their dorms. It broadcast music selected by students and other pertinent campus information. The station ceased operations in 1990 but was reconstituted in 1994. In 2008, WALT transitioned its primary broadcast medium to public live webcasting, extending its reach beyond the Davidson area.
WALT 1610 supports a diverse community of music enthusiasts and provides a public forum for all students. Its weekly programming is powered by more than 70 volunteer DJs. In addition to live broadcasting, WALT hosts live events on campus and collaborates with other student organizations to foster a shared love of music and the arts. WALT oversees “Depot,” an accessible practice space on campus for student bands.
